Early tribes along the western coast of Africa used adornments made from knotted ropes to symbolize love larger than a couple's love. The adornments symbolized the tribe members allegiance to the entire community because they realized that their future will depende upon love and commitment to the core beliefs, customs and traditions that identified the tribe.

The colours of the pieces are symbolic and have important meanings understood by the tribe. Yellow and Orange – symbolizes hospitality, Green – symbolizes health and land.
